The Kefalonia International Airport (EFL) is located 8 Km west of Argostoli, the capital of kefalonia. Due to lack of public transportation from/to the airport, the most convinient way to reach your destination is by Taxi. There is taxi rank right outside the terminal building and taxis are always available.

There is a direct fight connection from/to Athens with at least one direct flight per day throughout the year. During the summer period there are two scheduled direct flights per day.
The duration of the non-stop flight from/to Athens is about 45 minutes.

By ship
Everyday there are several ferries sailing to Kefalonia. Kefalonia island is connected to the mainland via the two main ports, the Port of Patra and the Port of Kyllini. There are many available departures from both ports towards the Port of Sami and the Port of Poros in Kefalonia throughout the year. During the summer period, the companies reschedules their routes adding more frequent servises towards all ports on the island and even adding new destination ports to their schedules. During this period there is also a departure from Port of Kyllini direct to Argostoli and Lixouri almost in daily basis.

It is strongly advised to contact the Shipping companies direct in order to obtain updated and accurate information regarding the schedules and fares as well as make a reservation. Information on schedules can be provided from Port Authorities as well.

There are ships starting their journey from Bari or brindisi Italy and via Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Sami anchor to the port of Patra. By bus

There are many daily scheduled departures by bus from Athens via the ports of Patra and Kyllini to Kefalonia. Additionally, there are bus services from Korinthos and Patra and again via the two major ports by ferries to Kefalonia.

It is strongly advised to contact the bus service company (KTEL) to get informed regarding the schedules, routes and rates. It is important to be at the bus station at least 45 minutes before the bus departure time in order to purchase your tickets.

The capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli, is connected with Lixouri by a local Ferry Boat that departs every half hour in the summer and every hour in winter. The duration of the journey between Argostoli and Lixouri is 20 minutes.

Kefalonia - the island

The island of Cephalonia, also known as Kefalonia, Cephallenia, Cephallonia, Kefallinia, or Kefallonia, is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, with an area of 781 km². It is also a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region, and the only municipality of the regional unit. The capital of Cephalonia is Argostoli. The size of the island is ca. 780 km2, and the present population is about 35,000 people. The town of Argostoli has one-third of the island's inhabitants. Lixouri is the second major settlement, and the two towns together account for almost two-thirds of the prefecture's population.

Among important natural features are the Melissani and the Drogarati caves. The island's highest mountain is Mount Ainos, with an elevation of 1628m; to the west-northwest are the Paliki mountains, where Lixouri is found, with other mountains including Gerania and Agia Dynati. The top of Mount Ainos is covered with Abies cephalonica trees and is a natural park.

There are five harbours and ports in the prefecture: four main harbours on the island, Same or Sami, and a major port with links to Patras and Ithaca. Poros, in the south, has ferry routes to Kyllini; Argostoli, in the west, is the largest port, for local boats and ferries to Zante and regularly to Lixouri; Fiscardo, in the north, has links to Lefkas and Ithaca. There is room for about 100 small boats in Argostoli, where the port stretches 1 kilometre around the bay, while Lixouri is situated 4 km across the bay from Argostoli, on the Lixouri peninsula. There is a road connection to the rest of the island, but driving from Lixouri to Argostoli involves a 30 km detour.


Legend - History - Archaeology
An aition explaining the name of Cephallenia and reinforcing its cultural connections with Athens associates the island with the mythological figure of Cephalus, who helped Amphitryon of Mycenae in a war against the Taphians and Teleboans. He was awarded with the island of Same, which thereafter came to be known as Cephallenia.

Cephalonia has also been suggested as the Homeric Ithaca, the home of Odysseus, rather than the smaller island bearing this name today. Robert Bittlestone, in his book Odysseus Unbound, has suggested that Paliki, now a peninsula of Cephalonia, was a separate island during the late Bronze Age, and it may be this that Homer was referring to when he described Ithaca. A project starting in the Summer of 2007, and lasting three years examines this possibility.

In the Southwest of the island, in the area of Leivatho, an ongoing archaeological field survey by the Irish Institute at Athens has discovered dozens of sites, with dates ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Venetian period. From archaeological point of view Cephalonia is an extremely interesting island. Archaeological findings go back to 40,000 BP. Without any doubt the island's most important era is the Mycenaean era from approx. 1500-1100 B.C. The archaeological museum in Cephalonia’s capital Argostoli – although small – is regarded as the most important museum in Greece for its exhibits from this era.

The most important archaeological discovery in Cephalonia (and in Greece) of the past twenty years was the discovery in 1991 of the Mycenaean tholos tomb at the outskirts of the village Tzanata, near Poros, Kefalonia in south-eastern Cephalonia (Municipality of Elios-Pronni) in a lovely setting of olive trees, cypresses and oaks. The tomb was erected around 1300 B.C. Kings and high ranked officials were buried in these tholos tombs during the Mycenaean period. It is the biggest tholos-tomb yet found in north-western Greece. The tomb was excavated by the archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas. The size of the tomb, the nature of the burial offerings found there and its well-chosen position point to the existence of an important Mycenaean town in the vicinity.

In late 2006, a Roman grave complex was uncovered as excavations took place for the construction of a new hotel in Fiscardo. The remains date to the period between the 2nd century B.C. and the 4th century A.D. Archaeologists described this as the most important find of its kind ever made in the Ionian Islands. Inside the complex five burial sites were found, including a large vaulted tomb and a stone coffin, along with gold earrings and rings, gold leaves which may have been attached to ceremonial clothing, glass and clay pots, bronze artefacts decorated with masks, a bronze lock and bronze coins. The tomb had escaped the attentions of grave robbers and remained undisturbed for thousands of years. In a tribute to Roman craftsmanship, when the tomb was opened the stone door swung easily on its stone hinges. Very near to the tomb a Roman theatre was discovered, so well preserved that the metal joints between the seats were still intact.

Monasteries
Across the broader island, two large monasteries are to be found: the first is that of Haghia Panagia, in Markopoulo to the southeast, and the other lies on the road between Argostoli and Michata, on a small plain surrounded by mountains. This second has an avenue of about 200 trees aligned from NW to SE, with a circle in the middle, and is the monastery of Saint Gerasimus of Kefalonia, patron saint of the island, whose relics can be seen and venerated at the old church of the monastery.


Tourism

Tourists from all over Greece, Europe and the world visit Cephalonia. It is a popular vacation destination for many Italians, due to its close proximity to Italy. As one of the largest islands in Greece, it is well-equipped to handle the influx of tourists during the summer time. Most tourists stay is Lassi, which is near the capital Argostoli, or in the southern villages of Skala and Katelios. It has something to offer everyone. Two natural attractions, Melissani's underground lake and Myrtos beach, have helped popularize Cephalonia. The film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), shot on the island itself, made Cephalonia more widely known.


Culture

Perhaps the best known appearance of Cephalonia in popular culture is in the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, by English author Louis de Bernières. The book is believed to be inspired by the picturesque village of Farsa, just outside of Argostoli. The love story comprising the theme of the book is set before and after the Acqui Division massacre,[8] during the Second World War, and the film adaptation was released in 2001.

The famous Myrtos Beach
The island is covered by dense vegetation and offers a great range of natural beauty, including beaches—many of them inaccessible from land—and spectacular caves. Myrtos, the most famous of these beaches, is a major tourist attraction, and has been ranked fifth worldwide for its beauty. Fishing is very common throughout the waters within and around the island, and the harbours of Argostoli and Lixouri are the main fishing centres.


Roads
The first larger roads were built by the English in the 19th century. In the 20th century asphalted roads were built, and since 1995 almost all streets connecting villages and beaches are covered with asphalt. since ca. 2000 the Lixouri bypass was built and a four lane street south of Argostoli was constructed. In summer the airport handles a number of charter flights from all over Europe.

Η Κεφαλονιά είναι το μεγαλύτερο και το πιο ορεινό νησί των Επτανήσων και το έκτο σε μέγεθος στην Ελλάδα. Βρίσκεται απέναντι από την είσοδο του Πατραϊκού Κόλπου, βόρεια της Ζακύνθου και νότια της Λευκάδας και της Κέρκυρας. Έχει έκταση περίπου 781 τ.χλμ. και σε αυτό κατοικούν περίπου 35.000 κάτοικοι. Μεγάλο μέρος της έκτασης του καταλαμβάνει η οροσειρά Αίνος. Η πρωτεύουσα του νομού Κεφαλληνιάς και Ιθάκης είναι το Αργοστόλι, από το 1757.

Οι κόλποι του Μύρτου και του Αθέρα στα βόρεια, και των Λουρδάτων και του Κατελειού στα νότια ξεχωρίζουν για τις γοητευτικές παραλίες που προσελκύουν πολλούς επισκέπτες κάθε χρόνο. Ένας μεγάλος αριθμός τουριστών επισκέπτεται το νησί κάθε χρόνο. Οι επισκέπτες αυξήθηκαν από τη στιγμή που το βιβλίο "Το μαντολίνο του λοχαγού Κορέλι" έγινε ταινία (2001), η οποία γυρίστηκε στο νησί.

Στην Κεφαλονιά υπάρχουν δύο μεγάλα μοναστήρια. Το ένα είναι το μοναστήρι του Αγ. Ανδρέα Μηλιαπιδιάς, το οποίο βρίσκεται στο σημερινό δήμο Λειβαθούς και το άλλο βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του νησιού, στην κοινότητα Ομαλών και είναι αφιερωμένο στον προστάτη της νήσου Αγ. Γεράσιμο. Αμφότερα είναι γυναικεία. Στο τελευταίο εκτυλίχθηκε και το γνωστό κωμικό περιστατικό της Μ. Πέμπτης, όπου ο "Κεφαλονίτικος" μεθυσμένος παπάς, διαβάζοντας με σοφία, έβγαλε τα Ευαγγέλια 13.

Το όνομα Κεφαλλήνια, όπως την αποκαλεί ο Ηρόδοτος, προήλθε από τους Κεφαλλάνες, λαό της Δυτικής Ελλάδας. Η ταραγμένη ιστορία του νησιού, ωστόσο, επέφερε μεγάλες διακυμάνσεις στον πληθυσμό του ενώ ακολούθησε έντονη εσωτερική μετανάστευση προς τα αστικά κέντρα. 

Τα σπουδαιότερα αξιοθέατα είναι το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αργοστολίου, το Ναυτικό και Περιβαλλοντικό Μουσείο Φισκάρδου, με πληροφορίες για την ιστορία του νησιού, τη θαλάσσια ζωή και τις φυσικές ομορφιές, το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Κεφαλονιάς και Ιθάκης, στα Δαυγάτα, το Εκκλησιαστικό Μουσείο Ιεράς Μονής Αγίου Ανδρέα Μηλαπιδιάς, όπου εκτίθενται εκκλησιαστικά κειμήλια, αγιογραφίες, εικόνες και τοιχογραφίες και η Μονή Αγίου Γερασίμου(ή Νέας Ιερουσαλήμ). Eligibility

Who can apply to the Narrative Fiction Workshop?

1. All applicants must be over 18 years old.
2. All applicants must send a specimen of their fiction writing (2-3 pages) or a text explaining why they want to participate in the Workshop.
3. All applicants must know how to use a word processor and the Internet. 
   
   
   NB: The Workshop will be held in English.

Narrative Fiction Workshop (NFW) Fee: 950 euros

The fee includes:

1. 30- 40 hours writing workshop. The teaching hours will range between 30 (minimum) and 40 maximum, depending on the daily demands of the workshop (e.g. excursions, writing exercises etc).
2. Teaching materials, extensive notes, bibliography, reading lists
3. 10-day stay at the Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture in the village of Metaxata on the island of Kefalonia, Greece. The participants will stay in groups of two. Each room contains two single beds and private bathroom.
4. Full breakfast at the Ionion Center.
5. Two excursions to the local sites of Kefalonia on a charter bus.

The fee does not include:

1. Transportation costs to and from Kefalonia, Greece
2. Transportation costs around the island of Kefalonia.
3. Meals (except for breakfast).
4. Tickets to sites during to excursions.

Cancellations
In case of cancellation on part of the participant by the 5th of July, the whole amount of money is returned to the applicant via paypal or bank deposit.
In case of cancellation on part of the participant later than the 5th of July, no refund of any amount can be made.

In August 2012 the Ionion Center for the Arts and Cultures is hosting the Narrative Fiction Workshop designed and taught by Cristos Chryssopoulos following the CAA/AWP teaching standards for Creative Writing.

The Narrative Fiction Workshop (NFW) is organized around 10 teaching modules and 5 educational contexts. It is directed and run by writer Christos Chrissopoulos following the CAA/AWP teaching standards for Creative Writing. The NFW makes no distinction between narrative genres. It offers participants a synthetic overview of the writing process, combining writing practice with theory on the novel, essay, criticism, short-prose and non-fiction writing.   

The Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture is located in the village  Metaxata of Livatho, on the island of Kefalonia. Its fundamental aims include the protection, creation and promotion of the  Art’s and Culture, within the frame of the European Community’s policies, concerning European and  Global  Culture.

A personal and philosophical focus or context gives participants opportunities to explore their identity and writing. The development of the learning spirit inside each participant comes from the heart and mind connection that is revealed through each participant's reflection, values, and ways of knowing.

A social, cultural, and historical focus or context gives participants opportunities to explore relationships with others, community, culture, customs, other ways of knowing, national and international events and issues, and the history of humanity and art.

An imaginative and literary focus or context gives participants opportunities to use their intuition and imagination to explore alternative worlds and possibilities; different types of classical and contemporary genres including fantasy, science fiction, and humour; and particular authors. How do I use my imagination and intuition and that of others to understand and relate to people, the community, the world, and society in a positive way? How do I foster imaginative ideas of self and others? How do I use intuitive hunches to support creative problem solving or inquiry approaches?

A communicative focus or context gives participants opportunities to explore different methods, forms, and issues related to language, communication, and the mass media. How do I make sense of and communicate with the world? How do I support communication with differing audiences? How do I know if communication is effective?

An environmental and technological focus or context gives participants opportunities to explore the natural and constructed world including the landscape of Kefalonia. How do I describe, analyze, and shape the world around me? How does that natural and  technological world affect and shape me?

The purpose of Module 1 is to introduce participants to the creative process to clarify the connections between literary traditions, reading, and writing to review the stages of the writing process to review the basics of conferencing to introduce participants to the basic vocabulary and concepts for writing

Module 2: The World Around Us

The purpose of Module 2 is to encourage participants to see that writers are often inspired to write by the world around them.

Issues for Consideration in Discussions:

What are the different ways people can be inspired by the world around them? About what aspects of the world around you are you especially interested in writing? Is there a particular tone you like to take when writing about the world around you? What writers do you like who are inspired by the world around them? How is some aspect of the world around you reflected in this selection of your writing? Does it say what you intend it to say? If not, where does the problem lie? What are the strengths of this writing? How could this writing lead to other writing projects?

Αναλυτικό πρόγραμμα Εργαστηρίου

Γενικά

Το Εργαστήριο Πεζού Λόγου (ΕΠΛ) προσφέρεται από το Εργαστήρι του Βιβλίου και σχεδιάστηκε από τον Χρήστο Χρυσόπουλο ακολουθώντας το πρότυπο διδασκαλίας της Δημιουργικής Γραφής (CAA/AWP Standards) ως ακαδημαϊκού μεταπτυχιακού μαθήματος στις ΗΠΑ (MFA in Creative Writing). Το ΕΠΛ δεν διαχωρίζει τα λογοτεχνικά είδη, αλλά προσφέρει στους συμμετέχοντες μια συνθετική επισκόπηση της συγγραφικής εργασίας, συναιρώντας την πρακτική και τη θεωρητική άσκηση στο μυθιστόρημα, το δοκίμιο, την κριτική, τη σύντομη φόρμα και τη μη-μυθοπλαστική γραφή / non-fiction (ημερολόγιο, βιογραφία, ταξιδιωτική λογοτεχνία κ.λπ.).

Βασικές λειτουργίες του ΕΠΛ

• Δημιουργική / Παραγωγική. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα ασκηθούν στη γραφή, δηλαδή θα ερευνήσουν, θα αναπτύξουν και θα εκφράσουν ιδέες μέσα από το γράψιμο. Ζητήματα που θα εξεταστούν σε αυτήν την κατηγορία είναι: από πού προέρχονται οι ιδέες, με ποιον τρόπο μπορούν να αναπτυχθούν, με ποιες μεθόδους μεταλλάσσονται σε λογοτεχνία και δομούνται ως κείμενα, ποια στάδια μεσολαβούν από την πρώτη γραφή ως την οριστική εκδοχή και την έκδοση κ.ά.
• Πολιτισμική / Ιστορική. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα κληθούν να αναγνωρίσουν πόσο σημαντικό είναι για έναν συγγραφέα να έχει προσωπική άποψη για τον ρόλο της λογοτεχνίας ως πολιτισμικού φαινομένου, καθώς και να γνωρίζει την ιστορική της εξέλιξη και την επικοινωνία της με τις άλλες τέχνες και τον δημόσιο βίο. Έμφαση θα δοθεί στη σχέση της λογοτεχνίας με τη λαϊκή κουλτούρα, τις πολιτισμικές και ανθρωπιστικές σπουδές και την τεχνολογία.
• Κριτική / Αναστοχαστική. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα ασκηθούν στην ανάγκη να εξετάζουν οι ίδιοι ενδελεχώς τα κείμενά τους, να συζητούν με κριτικό πνεύμα τα γραπτά των άλλων και να ομιλούν δημόσια και αυθόρμητα για τη λογοτεχνία. Τα εργαλεία και οι δεξιότητες που αναπτύσσονται μέσω αυτής της λειτουργίας θα επιτρέπουν στους συμμετέχοντες να ανταποκρίνονται στα κείμενα με συστηματικά αλλά και εύπλαστα ερμηνευτικά σχήματα, να μη σπεύδουν σε γρήγορες κρίσεις και να αποδέχονται τον πειραματισμό.
  

Βιογραφικό εισηγητή

Ο Χρήστος Χρυσόπουλος γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα τον Δεκέμβριο του 1968. Είναι πεζογράφος και δοκιμιογράφος. Έχει τιμηθεί με το βραβείο Αφηγηματικού Πεζού Λόγου της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών (2008).

Το πιο πρόσφατο βιβλίο του είναι o "Φακός στον στόμα" - Ένα χρονικό για την Αθήνα (Εκδόσεις Πόλις 2012). Άλλα βιβλία του είναι: Ο βομβιστής του Παρθενώνα (Καστανιώτης, 2010), Οι συνταγές του Ναπολέοντα Δελάστου (διηγήματα, Οδυσσέας, 1997), Σουνυάτα (μυθιστόρημα, Καστανιώτης, 2004), Ο μανικιουρίστας (νουβέλα, Οδυσσέας, 2000), Περίκλειστος κόσμος (μυθιστόρημα, Καστανιώτης, 2003), Φανταστικό μουσείο (πεζογράφημα, Καστανιώτης, 2005), Το γλωσσικό κουτί (δοκίμιο, Καστανιώτης, 2006), Η λονδρέζικη μέρα της Λώρας Τζάκσον (μυθιστόρημα, Καστανιώτης, 2008 - βραβείο Αφηγηματικού Πεζού Λόγου της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών), το δίγλωσσο artist book Το μαύρο φόρεμα / Τhe black dress (RCIPP, 2002), σε συνεργασία με τη φωτογράφο Diane Neumaier, το λεύκωμα Encounters (Listasafn Reykjavikur, 2003) και το δοκίμιο Το διπλό όνειρο της γραφής σε συνεργασία με τον ποιητή Χάρη Βλαβιανό (Πατάκης, 2010).

Τρόποι πληρωμής

Το κόστος συμμετοχής στο Καλοκαιρινό Εργαστήρι Πεζού Λόγου είναι 950 ευρώ. 

Για την κατοχύρωση της συμμετοχής όλοι οι ενδιαφερόμενοι θα πρέπει να αποστείλουν προκαταβολή 300 ευρώ, μέσω paypal ή κατάθεσης σε τραπεζικό λογαριασμό. 

Η πλήρης εξόφληση του ποσού θα πρέπει να γίνει μέσω paypal ή κατάθεσης σε τραπεζικό λογαριασμό  το αργότερο μέχρι και 30 Ιουλίου 2012.

Ακυρώσεις

Σε περίπτωση ακύρωσης της συμμετοχής από την πλευρά του συμμετέχοντα μέχρι τις 05 Ιουλίου 2012, του επιστρέφεται στο ακέραιο το καταβληθέν ποσό πλην των τραπεζικών προμηθειών. 

Σε περίπτωση ακύρωσης της συμμετοχής από την πλευρά του συμμετέχοντα μετά τις 05 Ιουλίου 2012, δεν θα επιστρέφεται οποιοδήποτε ποσό έχει καταβάλλει ο ενδιαφερόμενος. 

Διευκρινίζεται ότι απαιτείται η συμμετοχή 10 (δέκα) ατόμων για την διεξαγωγή του Εργαστηρίου. Σε περίπτωση που ο αριθμός αυτός δεν συμπληρωθεί, τότε το Εργαστήρι δεν θα διεξαχθεί και το ποσό που έχει καταβάλλει ο κάθε ενδιαφερόμενος θα επιστραφεί στο ακέραιο, μέσω paypal ή κατάθεσης σε τραπεζικό λογαριασμό, πλην των τραπεζικών εξόδων.

Κόστος συμμετοχής στο Εργαστήρι και παροχές

Πόσο κοστίζει; Τι περιλαμβάνει;

Το κόστος συμμετοχής είναι 950 ευρώ για κάθε συμμετέχοντα και περιλαμβάνει:

1. 30-40 ώρες σεμιναρίου. Οι διδακτικές ώρες θα είναι κατ' ελάχιστον 30 αλλά ενδέχεται να αυξηθούν χωρίς επιπλέον κόστος, ανάλογα με τις καθημερινές απαιτήσεις του σεμιναρίου (π.χ. εκδρομές, συγγραφική εργασία κλπ).
2. Πλήρεις σημειώσεις και εκτενής βιβλιογραφία για τις ανάγκες του εργαστηρίου.
3. Δεκαήμερη διαμονή στο Ιόνιο Κέντρο Τεχνών και Πολιτισμού στα Μεταξάτα Κεφαλονιάς με πλήρες πρωινό, σε δίκλινο δωμάτιο.
   Διευκρινίζεται ότι οι συμμετέχοντες θα μείνουν ανά δύο σε κάθε δωμάτιο. Τα δωμάτια διαθέτουν δύο μονά κρεβάτια και ιδιωτικό μπάνιο.
4. Δύο ολοήμερες εκδρομές στην Κεφαλονιά (μετάβαση από και προς τον τόπο της εκδρομής με ιδιωτικό ναυλωμένο λεωφορείο).

Στην τιμή δεν περιλαμβάνονται:

• Κόστος μετάβασης από και προς την Κεφαλονιά
• Γεύματα (εκτός από το πρωινό)
• Είσοδοι σε αξιοθέατα κατά τη διάρκεια των εκδρομών

Προϋποθέσεις συμμετοχής στο Εργαστήρι

Ποιοι μπορούν να συμμετέχουν;

1. Το Εργαστήρι απευθύνεται σε ενήλικες.
2. Οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να αποστείλουν δείγμα λογοτεχνικού κειμένου (2-3 σελίδες) ή εναλλακτικά ένα κείμενο προθέσεων στο οποίο να εξηγούν σύντομα για ποιον λόγο θέλουν να παρακολουθήσουν το εργαστήριο
3. Οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να έχουν βασική γνώση χειρισμού ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή.  
   
   
   Σημείωση: Το Εργαστήρι θα διεξαχθεί στην αγγλική γλώσσα.

Το Ιόνιο Κέντρο Τεχνών και Πολιτισμού στην Κεφαλονιά φιλοξενεί φέτος τον Αύγουστο το Εργαστήρι Πεζού Λόγου που σχεδιάστηκε και διεξάγεται από τον Χρήστο Χρυσόπουλο ακολουθώντας το πρότυπο διδασκαλίας της Δημιουργικής Γραφής (CAA/AWP Standards) ως ακαδημαϊκού μαθήματος στις ΗΠΑ.
